Default Danish Cavalry Badges (Modern)

Hi All

I have just aquired 3 great modern Danish Cavalry badges, very smart indeed! Big thanks to Birger

On the left is 'Gardehusarregimentet', 1969-issue (matt gold finish), obsolete 1999 when GHR amalgamated with 'Sjaellandske Livregiment' into current 'Gardehusarregimentet', the one on the right. The badge in the middle is the 'Jydske Dragonregiment'.

The Danes originally had six dragoon regts: 1st (disbanded 1866) - 2nd (disbanded 1909) - 3rd and 5th amalgamated 1935 into 'Jydske Dragonregiment' - 4th (disbanded 1922) and only one hussar rgt (GHR).
After 1923 a common all purpose uniform was introduced. All units were characterized by a small button above right breast pocket. This button showed a crossed sabre and carbine for the dragoons and the crowned royal cypher for the hussars. These buttons were obsolete by 1949-51 when the badges were introduced as stated above.

Jydske Dragonregiment
(English: Jutish Dragoon Regiment) is the sole pure armoured regiment of the Danish Army.

It was formed in 1932 by the amalgamation of 3. Dragonregiment in Århus and 5. Dragonregiment from Randers. Originally located in Randers, it moved to a new barrack in Holstebro in 1953, where it has been ever since. Serving with UNPROFOR in Bosnia, the Dragoons of Jutland assaulted Serb AT-2 Sagger positions in the first use of Danish armour since the Second World War.

On July 19, 2005, Prinsens Livregiment was merged with Jydske Dragonregiment.

From the 1960s to 2004 the regiment had responsibility for three armoured battalions, one reconnaissance battalion and three motorized infantry battalions. The three armoured battalions were assigned to different brigades, the recce battalion and later(1992) one armoured battalion as independent battalions in Danish Division. From 1992-2004 the regiment also had to form three light reconnaissance squadrons assigned to three of the five brigades. With the three infantry battalions and regimental staff, in war time, the regiment could form a battlegroup, whit combat support/artillry troops from others regiments.

The regiment today serves only in the armoured role, with one panserbataljon (armored battalion) the opklaringsbataljon (reconnaissance battalion) is now tasked with training conscripts, and has a new name: Uddannelsebatajlon. This is done in two HBU units (Hærens Basis Uddannelse = "Army Basic Training") and one HRU unit (Hærens Reaktionsstyrkeuddannelse = "Army Reaction Force Training").

The Guard Hussars
(Danish: Gardehusarregimentet), abbreviated GHR, is a special cavalry unit, the primary task of which is to place mounted escorts and commando forces at the service of the regent, and to train the guard hussars for various functions in the mobilisation force.[1] The Guard Hussars is one of two cavalry regiments of the Danish Army, and was formed in 2001 through the amalgamation of the original Guard Hussars with two infantry regiments:

Zealand Life Regiment
Danish Life Regiment

Although the Guard Hussars themselves date from 1762, the Danish Army takes the date of the founding of a regiment from its oldest part, in this case the Zealand Life Regiment, which was founded in 1614. This makes the Guard Hussars the oldest regiment of hussars in the world still operational. In addition to its operational role, the Guard Hussar Regiment is one of two regiments in the Danish Army (along with the Den Kongelige Livgarde) to be classed as 'Guards'; in this case, the Guard Hussars perform the same role as the Household Cavalry do in the British Army. The ceremonial uniform of the Guard Hussar Regiment dates from 1860.

The motto of the regiment is in Latin: In actis esto volucris, which translates to "Be swift in action".

From 1961 to 1972 the regiment had responsible for two armoured battalions, one recon battalion and three infantry battalions. From 1972-2000 the responsible was one armoured, one MechInfantery, one Recon and two Infantry battalions. From 2000-2004 the responsible was two armoured, two MechInfantery, one Recon and two Infantry battalions. From 1992-2004 the regiment also had to form two light Recon Squadrons sign to the Brigades.

Today the Gardehusarregiment is classed as a cavalry regiment, it is in fact a mixed armoured and infantry unit, with four battalions:

1st Battalion - Armoured Infantry
2nd Battalion - Training
3rd Battalion - Reconnaissance
4th Battalion - Training

These three badges will go with my Danish Hussars "Bonnet de Police" (Tent Cap).
