Hi Everyone,
I am seeking advice on this Infantry general pattern shako plate that I have on appro. from a fellow collector. it is 158mm x 105 mm approx. Is it original or a copy and how you can tell? I can supply more pics if required.
best regards

Is there a flaw mark in the die in the top right, just above the orb of the crown.
There's a few others marks common to the firmin die pattern. They used to stamp them with an F on the rear, but stopped doing it a while back.

Lots of these coming in from India these days though.

Then it's a copy .

Ps... it's got spurred spheres on the orb of the crown. That's definitely the Firmin die pattern.

If I was you, I would buy a fake one, for about £15, from a dealer, see if yours is the same, or not. Then sell the fake on flee bay for £10.00.

Default SHAKO PLATE -ORIGINAL OR COPY

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the responses.
My collector friend is asking around AU$700 ONO as a genuine item -thus my reason for caution. It is not in my sphere of expertise but if true would be a great item to have. I cannot find an "F" mark on the back. I am attaching a close up of the crown area to hopefully give more detail. I can see the spurs and a die imperfection on the edge of the plate above and to the left of the orb-is this what is referred to? Also , it is mentioned that there are other indicators on the genuine article; what would these be?
I have looked closely at two fleabay copies from different dealers and they have slight differences to each other and to my example. Therefore buying a copy from a dealer I don't think would help me.

Generally speaking the originals do not have the little orbs projecting from the cross at the top of the crown.

They also have a very fine, and in some cases not present, border around the plate.

While not reliable, it's a good indication, as almost all copies have these.

Another Indian made copy has a very shallow GR in the centre and generally the quality of the die engraving is less fine or bold.

Currently there are a these two versions of generic pattern (The Firmin die and the copies from it, plus a shallow lower grade), a Royal Scots and a slightly different shaped, smaller, Royal Artillery plate.
