Looking for positive ID re. beige beret
Attempting to ID the beret (with the star on it) fellas.
More yellow in colour than usual SAS berets which is why I doubt it is SAS.. Made by Supak. Not sure if date is 1950 or 1960 ? Any ideas ? |

Hard to tell, But I would also say 1950 when enlarged due to shape of top of '5'

By 1960 it should have a slider pocket, so I agree it is 1950

If made in 1950 and therefore not SAS: who was wearing a similar coloured beret in those days ?!

21 SAS were formed in Jan 1947 and in 1950 raised a Sqn to fight in Korea, although in the event it was re-routed to form a Sqn under Mike Calvert in the Malayan Scouts. It seems possible that you have a beret from the period when the unit was intended for Korea.

Hi I heard officers of the Gloucester Hussars did also wear beige berets. SAS readopted them only in 1956/7.

That makes sense, as initially the re-raised SAS were a part of the 'original' Army Air Corps (1942-49) and, along with the Glider Pilot Regiment and Air OP squadrons, wore the maroon airborne forces beret. I am unsure of the precise dates when the beret changes took place though.

Toby,
I think the SAS switched maroon beret for beige again in 1956. Cheers JB Quote:

JB, The Royal Glos Hussars have never worn a beige beret! There may be confusion with the officer cap badge backing being their affiliated Duke of Beaufort beige see pic. The RGH have as a "Unit" worn dark blue and KRH brown colours. Regards Matt

May be confused with the Royal Wessex Yeo wearing the Royal Hussars cowpat (all ranks).
The "Glaws Hoozers" officers did wear that color in their Torin.... and on the lapels of their mess kit.
