Default Hampshire Yeomanry

Hello Chaps, heres mine have me doubts about this one, Gaunt tablet or not. Saw an original bi metal one years ago cant remember a makers name on it but it had a circular brazing hole behind the rose and two on the scroll. Cheers Sean.

Sean,
I agree with Griff about the makers plate, also it should have a slider and not be lugged if a true economy issue (1916) cap badge.

Is there such a thing as a Hampshire Yeomary 'economy' as 99% of this badge are all g/m with bi-metal versions being the exception (or copies)?

No there is not an ecomony version. From1908 until post WW2 they are all brass. The bimetal ones were post WW2.

This is a history of the Hants Yeo post WW2. Between the wars the regt, now reduced to a single battery, continued to wear Yeomanry cap and collar badges. During the war photos suggest that they also wore standard RA grenade cap badges.

Post WW2 they were the 295 (Hampshire Carabiniers Yeomanry) Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment RA (TA) from Jan 1947 when they were reconstituted in as part of 100 (AA) AGRA (TA) .

However less than 2 years later in Sept 1948, 100 (AA) AGRA (TA) was disbanded. It is not clear whether the regt was reduced down to Bty strength. In 1955 the Hampshire Carbineers were formally put into suspended animation.

In 1963 Hampshire Carabiniers Yeomanry title was resuscitated and concurrently amalgamated with 457 (Wessex) Regiment, RA. The new Regiment was redesignated 457th (Wessex) Regiment, RA (Hampshire Carabiniers Yeomanry).

In 1964 the Regiment was redesignated 457th (Wessex) Heavy Air Defence Regiment, RA (Hampshire Carabiniers Yeomanry).

Bi-metal badges do exist but were also recorded as being produced in the 1970's bearing false Gaunt London marks by Laurie Archer.

The IWM has the s/p card for the bi-metal 295 Hvy AA Regt RA (Hants Carbs Yeo) TA which has a s/p date of 1951:

http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/30074293

These badges would have ceased to be worn in 1955 so a scarce badge.

http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/30074293

Rather interestingly it includes the sentence:

To guide for Anodised Aluminium. Spec No. UK/CIC/2124 Cat No CB 3236

which does suggest that had the existing bi-metal stocks been used up then it could have been produced in a/a.
