Default Devon and Dorsets in Bosnia

I was looking for photos of Devon and Dorsets in the 1990's when I found this one. It seems to be a Lt-colonel in Bosnia in 1995, with 20 Armoured Brigade TRF. I am amazed to see a shoulder title worn in 1995. But it may be normal. Thank you for your comments

Might the revival of the shoulder title on the combat jacket have had something to do with the absence of the regimental cap badge when wearing the UN badge and beret; a temporary measure at regimental level before regimental TRFs became the norm.

I am guessing there were other regiments in UNPROFOR who produced their own version of sleeve mounted identification, for instance on a brassard attached to the shoulder strap.

The shoulder title may be worn as a reaction to temporarily losing regimental headress distinctions by having to wear a UN beret and badge which don't even identify that the wearer is in any nations military let alone his regiment.
Other British units have worn such titles whilst on UN service and ceased wearing them when the tour's finished.

Thank you for your comments. Are these titles from old stocks or made especially for UN tours ?

These titles were usually worn on brassards and were often of "modern" manufacture with merrowed (over sewn) edges. More examples in my album including LIGHT INFANTRY and ROYAL WELCH FUSILIERS.

It was a UN thing to show who they were because they were peacekeepers. The CO shown went on to command 20 Armd Bde in Kosovo in 2001.

Yes the wearing of unauthorised badges is wrong, but, it will never stop.

Even the Army Sergeant Major wears a coloured badge on the right sleeve of his MTP, instead of a rank slide.

The Guards RSMs wore the huge arm rank badge on combats. I think I have an image of the ASM at Sandhurst old combat jacket hung up with it on.

I would draw the line at shoulder titles for regimental or rather battalion nicknames. The essence of a nickname is that it is unofficial and word of mouth, surely.

I was also a bit suspicious of all that 'Desert Rats' hoo-ha in the Gulf.

1RRF wore white on red titles on brassards during a UNFICYP tour in 1978.
Rumour at the time was that they were ACF ones, which I believe they were.

The issue brassard and a pair worn after that tour by an individual attached to another unit 1978-79:
