In April 1944, Lord Lovat (Comd of 1 Special Service Bde) decided that each Commando unit in the brigade was to have one troop qualified as parachutists. In 45 Commando that was "E Troop", so it's not surprising to see a RM from that troop wearing para wings. Whether they continued (past D-Day) to ensure that the members of that troop were para qualified may be unlikely; they were, after all, somewhat busy fighting a war so replacements may not have not been para qualified. The RM wearing wings was possibly one of those who had done the course before D-Day and still remained with the troop over nine months later.
The veterans of E Troop, 45 Commando obviously were proud of the parachute heritage. http://gallery.commandoveterans.org/...forum.jpg.html |
