Default Light infantry?

is it possible to be more specific on this button. It is on a senior officers cap from c. 1930's-40's made in India.

Hello Jerry

Your button is a fairly general pattern used at various times by both the Rifle Brigade and the King's Royal Rifle Corps. It was also the standard Rifles pattern button used by some Indian Army units from 1901 on but between 1922 and 1947 it was used by both the 6th Rajputana Rifles and the 13th Frontier Force Rifles. It was likely used by some of the Auxiliary Force units as well.

Also worn by some British Territorial battalions who retained their Rifles traditions.

This is an officers cap of the Liverpool Rifles.
