Default 5th Loyal Suffolk Yeomanry Button

Hi all...

A welcome Norfolk detecting find for myself this weekend was this 5th Loyal Suffolk Yeomanry button. Can't find much about this unit online so just wondering if anyone knows much about them i.e. when they were active etc? Being my own find this one won't be sold!

Thanks all,

Phil

Hello Phil

A nice, very early button by the look of it.

There was a 5th Troop Loyal Suffolk Gentlemen and Yeomanry, raised in 1795 and your button could be for this Troop. Unless I have misread the situation, these Troops were more or less independent units and most had been disbanded by the end of the Napoleonic Wars, although some did remain until 1828 when all yeomanry units in Suffolk were disbanded.

Any information to be gleaned from the back of the button?

Roger

Afraid not Roger, no back mark and shank has been lost. It's convex and measures approx 20mm in diameter. I very rarely find military artefacts so this was a nice find on Saturday. Earlier this week I purchased a 1st Loyal Suffolk Yeomanry button from someone in Devon for stock so it's a bit odd I should go out and find this yesterday!
