1ST SOMERSET MILITIA BUTTON - VALUE?
Chaps
I bought a lot of QVC badges recently and this was in there. I am presuming a 1st Militia Bn pre 1882? Am I correct? It's w/m and unmarked. I want to sell it but have no idea of the value? Any ideas or interest? Thanks Alan |

Hi Alan
It's 1st Somerset Militia, O/R's tunic button, c.1855/1856 - 1881. As regards value, it depends whether it's "large" or "small". O/R's buttons are generally scarcer than Officers as they were issued with them and, in theory, they had to be returned and were often scrapped. Officers purchased their own buttons and could retain them so there are usually more around. Having said that, O/R's buttons tend to be less sought after than Officers, partly owing to the poorer quality. Likewise, "small" Militia buttons are generally scarcer than "large" but tend to be less valued. Whatever size it is, the value wouldn't be great, unless someone has a particular interest in Somerset and doesn't already have one! David Last edited by davidwyke; 17-03-16 at 12:14 PM. |

Thanks. it's large. As it's ORs I didn't imagine it had much value and thought £3-5? Alan |

Hello Alan
I would agree with David's valuation. Officers' silver plated versions sell for between £15 and £25 (depending on whose doing the selling!). Other ranks' buttons are, I would say, rarer but possibly wouldn't command such a high price being white metal rather than silver and less attractive! As with most items, condition is important. Thanks to you both. If anyone wants it then I will let them have it for £6 and that includes UK P&P.
