firman gilt buttons to ID
Hello Gents,
These two Firman salesman samples have been in my collection for a few years now, gathering dust. I hope they are of interest and if some of you can ID them that would be a bonus. Regards Garry. |

Hello Garry
As far as I can see you have a fine collection of basically naval buttons, a mix of navy, shipping line and yacht club buttons plus the odd hunt button or two. The button with the dragon looks like that for the 1st Punjab Regiment but as the dragon has no crown (at least I can't see one) I don't think it is. I believe the button with the fox over 'AHC' is for the Atherstone Hunt. The two crowns over 'CH' is for the Royal Calpe Hunt on Gibraltar. Hunt buttons are not my speciality, so I stand to be corrected. Some of the maritime buttons identify themselves - Dominion Shipping Line, Royal Cruising Club and so on. The three anchors over 'RYS' is, I believe, one version for the Royal Yacht Squadron'. The button with a pennant and star is the White Star Line. Once again, I am not really comfortable with maritime buttons but I expect someone who is will have all the answers! A very nice display and thanks for showing them. Roger |

Hi Garry,
As others have said, a great display. Thanks. I see a nice New Zealand Shipping Company button there. Cheers, Tinto |

Hello Gents The back marks vary from Firman& Sons Strand London, Firman& Sons LTD London, Firman London and C Miller & Son. What period? The button 3 011 is Port sanitary authority inspector. BTNS here are the pics. Tinto the N.Z.S.Co. is back marked C Miller & Son.
Thanks Garry |

Thank you for the extra images.
The button with the enamelled flag carries its name. The bronze button is the Royal Temple Yacht Club. Most of the Port Sanitary buttons do not have a rank. This one is unusal. I guess both trays date from the 1950s/1960s. Manufacturers used good quality, but obsolete items. |
