Ron another great badge. One question that I have wondered about is manufacturers. I know you can differentiate between dies and certain manufacturers mark their badges. But do you know which other companies made badges? I'm just talking about O/R badges. Also was the die created by the manufacturer and used solely by them?

Bryan, with regard to BW badges as there are no sliders makers marks are few and far between. I have a J.Gaunt and R J Lawrie, and have seen a G. Tutill all with tablets. As you see from my 02-36 thread I have 12 different dies in 30 years, so how many were there in 130 years? Large manufacturers could sub contract work to independent die-sinkers and engravers no end of them in Birmingham.

A most unusual Victorian officers glengarry badge by Kirkwoods of Edinburgh.
Silver plate and gilt with finely detailed lettering, the reverse fitted with belt loop and fastener. There is no evidence to suggest lugs were ever fitted. The sphinx has its own cotter pin fixing lug. Because of the thin space under the belt loop it would only fit a ladies elasticated belt, add the fact that the bottom point of the star has been removed I would suggest worn by an officers wife at regimental dances. Very, very nice Ron. Don’t see many 5th VB badges. Excellent definition, are the cap badges to the same standard - often the Perthshire ones are out and out fakes or don’t seem to be as crisp. I realise this is an officers badge but I would have thought the O/R white metal would be of an equal standard?
