I'm not saying I'm right but 3 Canon's would more likely be board of ordnance

You are absolutely right

Just did a Google search and it shows the badge with the three dots above the cannons. Is the other button, with the crown on, Board of Ordinance as well? Can't find a picture of that one.

Would 1812 be about the right age for this one?

Hi Irv,
I think the one with crown over three cannons was the RA button up until about 1871 or so.

They are both RA buttons. The one with three cannons pointing downward is late 1700s to about 1802. The crown and three cannons is as far as I can see is about 1802 to 1820. Yes, the original design was taken from the Board of Ordnance shield. I guess you could say, they were the original purveyors of artillery pieces and munitions. Hope that helps. What say you 54Bty? Regards, DJ.

Not my forte but I've seen the three cannon button(s) being sold as crimea war period buttons.

Yes Steve, You're right! Those on eBay are! You'll note that they have a scalloped edge and the word Unique on them. The original post picture is plain, Crown and three cannons, no scalloped edge.

Looking at the construction and the extra wording I would think they are later and the one I showed is earlier. What do you think? Both these buttons were found on IOW.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the clarification DJ, I obviously need to get my eyes tested and more importantly I learned something today.

Wilkinson-Latham in his 'Discovering British Military Badges and Buttons' has your first button dated as 1833-1838 and your second as 1785-1802, both are identified as Royal Artillery. The buttons in Steve's link are dated as 1838-1855.

Rgds, Thomas.
