Artist's Rifles Slouch Hat
Good day folks
This hat is for sale in a local auction house. Is it just a fantasy or a a recognised form of headdress. I have asked for some more photos. Many thanks James |

They saw service in the 2nd Boer war and from the pics it appears to be of the type from that period.

Slouch hats continued in wear for much of the Edwardian period after the Boer war ended.

I wonder where the version with the pointed down turned scroll ends belongs in the grand scope of things? It comes with loops and a shank so must be c.1905.

Been having a similar discussion offline this evening. This is one of those badges that seems a bit reluctant to give up its secrets. A bit of hard research required among the archives I reckon. Quote:
Not a question I can answer, I'm sorry to say. In addition, although we have the date it was approved, the date of its introduction is not something I've seen documented as yet. Occasionally, we see badges being worn a long time in advance of official approval. Not an exact science, which is one of the aspects of the hobby that for me makes it so fascinating. Hi Folks
I'm delighted to have sparked off such a lively discussion. So the hat could easily be correct. I have asked for additional pictures. Many thanks James |
