He is referring to the font of the letters on the badge.

Just read 'Vigilans' reply to my opinion of Volunteer Hospital.
The Volunteer Horse (as per the collar badge with VH recently listed on Ebay) was PRE 1896 and was entirely NSW not Australian. It was the predecessor of the later 1st Australian Horse which had 1/AH titles and the word Volunteer was not used. It is sometimes wrongly listed. 1AH badges were also worn at the Boer War and in black oxidised. Around 1897 the term Australian was more widely used in anticipation of Federation. Previously, the NSW Infantry had a Union Regiment with English Scottish and Irish companies which were split into separate regiments (5th NSW Scottish, 7th St Geo Eng Rif Rgt, 8th Irish). A good idea was to also have an Australian Rif Rgt (6th). While looking through my picture file to access these images, I found another VH title, apparently not converted to a brooch. I very much doubt if it is Vol Horse. Last edited by kingsley; 02-12-16 at 01:05 AM. |

I don't think I can buy that assumption that it's "Volunteer Hospital" do you have any reference to it being "Volunteer Hospital"?? It looks and smells like "Volunteer Horse". Does anyone have any information that can positively put it to bed either way?

Hi Gents,
This badge just finished and went for a very strong $660 (AUS) £390. Did anyone here grab it? Cheerio, Roy

Hi Roy,
Yes that was a lot of money especially for it being a kind of damaged badge turned into a brooch, I guess you could maybe have it repaired back to its original condition? Has anyone been able to gather any further information to pin point it being "Volunteer Horse" or "Volunteer Hospital"??? Thanks, Jas |

hi jas
ive only ever seen 3 of them so I class it as pretty rare. if it is a volunteer horse then yes, its a damaged badge turned into a brooch. however, if it is volunteer hospital, could it not have been meant to have been broached finished for wear by females? I haven't had a good hard look at it but the brooch looked period and factory finished? what are your thoughts? bc |

Damaged badge turned into a sweetheart......given the rarity I would put it at 350-400, but there is always someone who has deep pockets and long arms eh? |

A very good price considering the badge being broached.......... the owner of the badge does know his stuff ( he is not the seller ) and I would think that it is what it is said to be ,but for that money I would what to be 110% sure it is a Volunteer Horse badge.

It seems to be the eternal question? Vol Horse or Vol Hospital. Well you have an interesting point in regards to brooch factory made for females if it was Vol Hospital but on the face of it I would have to disagree for the following reasons. The fitting on the badge is ok quality but does not look like a Gaunt factory fitting. It is 100% as you say period done no doubt about that at all. The other issues are I would highly doubt Gaunt with ever drop a fitting over the company maker mark? and all factory made (military badge) brooch reverse badges came with the brooch fitting only i.e not the chain attachment, these were added by the wearer later for safety. Most AANS badges where you see a chain its just hooked to the pin with safety pin attached. I still think that this could possibly be repaired back to its original x2 lug reverse. Did you purchase this? if so I think you have a nice badge pricey but find another! perhaps THE War Memorial would have information on this badge? Thanks, Jas |
