Does anyone know the history of the 35th's hat badge?

Maybe check with the local historical societies in the area? They might have some info as to why the badge was designed the way it was.

There is a badge on ebay at the moment.
I have one much like it.
Did not think much of it before i saw the one on ebay
what do you guys think?

That one is a cast dud. An original would be crisply stamped.

The Maltese cross design is based on the badge of the 4th NSW Infantry in the 1890s which did not have a crown. Who first thought of the design is un known to me, the same as a most original badge heraldry. The Maltese cross was widely used in NSW and other states (especially Queensland), usually as a crossbelt. When a new regiment was formed, someone sat down with a paper and pencil and drew an appropriate crest for their regional military force and it is very hard now to know why.
