Default Hampshire Cyclist Battalion

I have purchased this Hampshire Cyclist Battalion sweetheart badge but I am rather puzzled by the vertical screw fitting that points downwards from the back of the badge. It suggests that something should be attached but I have no idea what.

Any thoughts please?

I hope this will help, I have this badge with the same fitting and have seen a few to other regiments. So it could be your missing bit.

Mercian,

that is brilliant; thank you. These are clearly an add on worn by old soldiers and represent the overseas chevrons earned; red for 1914 and blue for the subsequent years served.

I actually have a Royal Fusiliers sweetheart, (not that that is strictly the term if the soldier wore the lapel badge hinself), that is fixed to four blue chevrons. It does not have the screw fitting but I am sure that the principle is the same. They must date from after 1918 when the cloth chevrons were issued.

Simon

I think that these are relatively scarce. Yours is only the third or fourth of this type of badge that I have seen.
