Are there any fakes of badges with the lug & tang fasteners? I have never seen any and it would seem odd that a faker would go to that effort when 2 lugs would be simpler and accepted?
Cheers,
Alex

Alan,
Yes I agree, I didn’t mean Gaunt made them I know Gerrard did indeed make them is what I meant is that Gerard’s manufacturing process is different to traditional badge manufacturing.
But it’s hard for me to say how without a microscopic study
Kind regards Chay

Default Fake Lonsdale

Hi everyone,
It would appear that I have purchased the badge that has prompted this thread. Bought recently through an auction house. Can you please let me have your opinions on the badges authenticity.
Thanks
Andy

Thanks for the positive response guys. My concern was that the badge appears to have been cast and the hallmarks are cast in to the badge and not "punched in" as say an Assay office would do. There would appear to be casting residue on the hallmarks.
Does anyone else have a view on this, or is this how the Jewellers met the initial demand?
Thanks again,
Andy

I see what you mean Andy. The pitting on the scroll which was mentioned in one of the opening posts is now apparent.

Are there any mould lines on the badge? What’s the length and width?

A badge made from a cast of an original will be slightly smaller or larger. Perhaps someone with an original can contribute their measurements...

On balance I too think it’s good. I strongly suspect it’s had a hard life and suffered pitting and corrosion that someone has then cleaned off (probably with silver dip) revealing the damage to the surface of the silver which makes the finish appear as it does.

Cheers,

Luke

Hi Luke,

Thanks for your reply. Having looked at previous threads, it is identical to the badge in this particular thread, deemed to be original http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...light=Lonsdale.
There is a die/casting fault which can be viewed to the rear of the badge which is distinctive to both badges.
The length from the tips of the bottom scroll is 42mm. The height from the bottom of the scroll to the tip of the wing is 39mm.
Perhaps other owners could confirm the measurements of their badges. pm if necessary.
Thanks
Andy
