Default RCE Tunic badged up, WOW

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/380615362928?...928%26_rdc%3D1

This fellow sure had a nice battledress, even his two overcoats in the other auctions are badged up the same, even has GS badges on the sleeves of his overcoat.
Being an ex armoured type I am unaware of his rank, I know the arty types have master bombadier and such but what would this sappers rank be?
I have never seen a flaming bomb above the stripes before.

No pictures of the back, I wonder if it is pleated.

Mike

Rank is Staff Sergeant and the badges do not look all that old. Never heard of a 'master bombardier'.

The flaming grenade is listed as the badge for qualified Snr NCO's RCE. Sergeants and staff sergeants. See Clive Law's Distinguishing Patches pg 52 for a picture of a RCE Sgt wearing the grenade, sgt stripes, and 25 Bde patch.

FYI, Master Bombardier is the modern Canadian Artillery equivalent of Master Corporal.

Relisted, $100 cheaper - with pictures of the pleated back.

Thank you very much just looked it up, and a Master Bombardier is just a Bombardier appointment.

I don't believe there is technically anything wrong with the insignia on this uniform with exception of the trade level badge. Officially it was not to be worn by Sergeants who qualified for the flaming bomb badge as it would be redundant. However, odd insignia combinations are known to have existed. It was normal for home front uniforms to be badged to the fullest extent. Considering it is a late war manufactured garment it is possible that it saw little use. Price seems quite high IMO, especially for a commonly available unit/insignia, the incorrect use of the trade badge and without provenance.

Mike, Before the Sigs guys jump all over you, "Mercury" over the sergeants' chevrons for the RCCS should be added on your web page.

Thanks, Bill. I still need to add the footnotes and references to my page.

Do you have a ref for the Mercury badge before I go back to my sources to cite the authority for the grenade and gun badges?

Mike, The metal Mercury (in matched pairs) was approved June 13 1955 by Chief of the General Staff, replaced by the cloth matched pairs in 1962.
