Smile KSLI - Nice View of Rare Insignia!

Hi Gents,

I was thrilled recently to come across this lovely cabinet photograph depicting an early image of a KSLI officer.

The large officers cap badge was worn from 1881 - 1896. I am yet to find one of these but an example is high on my wants list.

Great to see these cloth collar badges being worn. I do have a pair of these but Churchill has them listed as 1st Shropshire Rifle Vol's.

So either this chap is regular KSLI, who also wore these collars OR the gent is 1st RV and wore the KSLI cap badge?

Can any of the uniform experts render an opinion?

Cheerio,

Roy.

Roy,

Could quite easily be RVC or Militia.

The Regulars, Militia and RVC were all wearing the same frock, same forage cap and were in Shrewsbury.

Thats the problem with B & W photos.

regards

From 1887 ( according to Westlake "The Rifle Volunteers" ) the Shropshire Rifle Volunteers had become the 1st and 2nd Volunteer Battalions KSLI and it was not unusual for members of the V.B.`s to wear similar badges to those worn by the Regular and Militia battalions ( sometimes in different metals ), nor was it unknown for Volunteers to continue to wear insignia long after it had been superseded by new designs.

Hi Gents,

Many thanks for your thoughts. I suspected as much but thought it best not too put forward to many thoughts.

I guess we will never know the exact attribution of this officer, however it's still rather nice to see this rare insignia so clearly displayed.

Cheers,

Roy.
