What you need to do is to get hold of some digital calipers and measure both of the marks on the two badges. You also need a 20-30x loupe to check for flaws in the characters and see if you can conclusively reconcile the two marks as coming from the same punch. From a couple of images on the forum this is really not possible.

The other thing you need to take on board is that while the marks may be from the same punch there is no way of knowing when the badges were actually stamped. Many years ago or last week? While marks to the sliders of A/A badges are, for the main, usually genuine it may well be a very different matter regarding non-A/A badges.

Regards

Chris
FIRMIN & SONS:- H = 1.5mm x W = 16mm (15.83) on the AA and the Bronze - the ampersand appears to be closer to the N than the S and the top of the last S is fading out.

* There is some verdigris bubbling up on the end of the bronzed brass slider that is distorting the middle of the makers mark.

Lets try again:

Hi Guys,

On anodised aluminium cap badges, the maker marked his badges in one of three ways:

a) FIRMIN & SONS

b) FIRMIN (as a single world but in a variety of styles)

c) F&S

c) FIRMIN LONDON (in a variety of styles)

Does anyone know what came first and the date of changes to second, third and fourth forms?

Regards

Chris
Did Chris manage to get a date ordered for these stampings in the end.

The FIRMIN. LONDON mark going down the slider on the Bronzed Firmin new Motto...... so there will be an AA out there with the same mark going down the slider (above post shows it going up on two different male die images).

16mm x 1mm "FIRMIN. LONDON"

This may help ,it may hinder.
Devon and Dorset . fat firmin mark dated 2005.anodised slider
Rifles beret badge. {} Firmin{} mark dated 2012 new metal lugs
Light Division band. No visible mark but in Firmin and Sons PLC bag. Dated 2005.New metal brass slider
Rifles cap badge. Fat Firmin mark dated 2014.new metal slider
Rifles beret badge .No visible mark dated 2006.new metal lugs.

Regarding the straight Firmin London mark,I can offer this .I have 2 Light Infantry badge with the same mark. But the one I believe is early has no void between the cords and ribbons .Where as the late one has voids, the Firmin pattern has the same void. But the new metal examples of both have no voids.

Yes Mike ... see post #31 above. That mark (FIRMIN&SONS) is a later one than the FIRMIN. LONDON.
