9th Royal Bomber Squadron badge
I purchased this recently and was wondering how old it was since the RAF No. IX (Bomber) Squadron has been around since WW1. It looks hand made and might be made of silver. Were these sweetheart pieces?

The badge was authorised by the King in November 1936, and as it features a Kings Crown it's pre-1952/3. So it falls within that time frame.
Yes they were usually sweetheart items. |

That's nice, not something you see every day either, incised into a piece of sheet silver, many of the emblems in the centre of the badges had been used from a particular squadrons inception.
The Air Ministry appointed Sir John Heaton Armstrong as Inspector of badges to the College of Arms in 1935 and from memory, it was he who designed the basic RAF squadron badge as they appear today, with the particular emblem and title scroll detail added, they started to become official in 1936. A very nice and unusual example to a very famous squadron, I should be delighted with that if I were you. Quote:
