Default Medical staff button Firmin & sons Of Dublin

Good afternoon

Victorian medical staff button.

When did Firmin make buttons in Dublin? I can't find info on this.

Many thanks

As far as I'm aware Firmin did not manufacture items in Dublin, they probably had an office and or agent there.

Dave.

Many thanks Dave. I can only find one more with a backstamp marking for Dublin on the web at the moment. I have found out that they were based at 2 Dawson Street Dublin in 1862 but can't find anything else. Does anybody know when they stopped using that premises?

Regards

Martyn

Hello Martyn

I agree with Dave in as much as I also believe Firmin only had an office in Dublin, not a manufacturing works.

A backmark of 'Firmin & Sons Ld Dublin" must be after 1876 when they became a limited company. The Dublin address on a backmark is not all that common but it is not rare either for that matter.

The attached photo is of a Firmin wrapper on a set of buttons (livery unfortunately!) giving their address as " ..... & 2, Dawson St Dublin". I believe they moved out of 13 Conduit Street in about 1879 and in 1886 they were giving a Dublin address of "73 Dame Street".

It would seem that your button would date from between about 1876 and 1886, give or take a couple of years.

So far I have been unable to establish when the Dublin office was set up.

Roger

Many thanks is nice to have a Dublin backstamp in the collection and the button is very pleasing.

It's good to share information on this site and I am learning a lot about buttons that I haven't researched until recently.

Regards

Martyn
