Hebbert & co London
Good afternoon
Can anybody date a backstamp. It's on a Worcester county police button which I think it's of the Victorian period. The design is not crowned so can't be dated that way. When did Hebbert & co become a limited company? The backstamp is Hebbert & co London. Can this be narrowed down? On the finds database for buttons it is incorrectly called Herbert & co. Many thanks Martyn |

Hello Martyn
Actually there is a button backmark for 'Herbert & Co'! Hebbert and Herbert often get confused but they are two separate companies! Roger |

Many thanks Roger I did wander if they both existed. Do you have dates for these companies?

Hello Martyn
My dates for these two companies are not particularly precise as I am only interested in them for their backmarks on buttons, not for their business as military outfitters. It doesn't help that the two companies are often confused with each other. Hebbert & Co were military outfitters/contractors from the mid 19th century turning to police and railway outfitters later on in the century. I have recorded examples of a 'Hebbert & Co' backmark on military buttons dating from the 1850s on. Herbert & Co were also outfitters/contractor I believe but I have only recorded backmarks of theirs dating from about the 1870s onwards. As far as button backmarks are concerned, both seem to have disappeared around the time of the First World War. Any information to the contrary would be gratefully accepted. Roger |

Many thanks Roger that is useful info. These two companies don't appear to be very well documented at all.
