I have wondered whether they ever found a "proper" home or ended up in the bin or flogged to a dealer.

Sadly, with the destruction of the old county regiments, amalgamations and the consequential loss of regimental museums many items of historical interest have been lost to future historians. Not so much the medals, silverware and the like but the personal stuff relating to individual soldiers.
I am convinced that it is anoraks* like ourselves who do the heavy lifting when it comes to preserving the artefacts and therefore the remembrance of the common soldier.
