Yes, it is correct and was even worn when the rest of the regiment were wearing the Lowland Brigade cap badge.

I've only just spotted that the cap is dark blue with a red toorie (tuft). This is wrong and should be a very dark ('rifle') green with black toorie. I'm sorry I did not notice that previously. The cap is good but not correct for Cameronians. Another mismatch.

The slidered ones were worn on the FSH in Edwardian times.

The same design was worn on lugs by pipers up to their amalgamation.

Same design but different timelines.

Claire, according to successive dress regulations the larger badge was for wear on the Foreign Service Helmet and there are photographs to show that it was. Like many others I suspect that the die still survives and is perhaps being used to churn out re strikes. Not so much 'fakes' as reproductions from an original die.

Cameron Highlanders, Black Watch, or the later, Queen's Own Highlanders (Seaforth and Cameron).

May be with this one, if not a fake ...

I have been collecting military badges of the World for many years. That's why I wanted to join the forum. I knew that in a collection, there were always good and bad surprises. Fortunately, the large majority of my items is genuine. But British militaria is so complex that I really need your expertise ...

And I believe also pipers of the Scots Guards, Royal Scots, King's Own Scottish Borderers, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.

Rgds, Thomas.

Yes, Thomas, you are correct. The 'pipers' of all the Scots regiments except the Cameronians.

Is there any proof of that? I was told a long time ago that the early ones were small, worn on the FSH but the later issue ones for pipers were the bigger ones?
Cheers,
Alex

I do believe you are right, Alex, the photos show helmets with the smaller badge and pipers the larger. I have checked.

Toby mentions that the larger badge appears in Dress Regulations. I have yet to see a larger pattern that matches the quality and construction technique of the smaller badge. As also mentioned above the smaller badges also come converted to sliders, probably for FSH wear. does anyone have the larger pattern that has the applied strengthening?

Just to clarify Claire, the small badge appears in dress regulations, a term used for officers. For soldiers, clothing regulations mention only the issue of pipers badges without mentioning regimental design. It is actual photographs that show the larger, pipers badge in wear. Pipers were proportionately few so if there is a flood of the larger badges it is because dies have survived and the badges re-struck.

Glad to help. It is useful to understand that until quite recent times, officers were 'dressed' and soldiers were 'clothed' as far as regulations were concerned.
