Coldstream Guard in SRR
I have a beret with a Coldstream Guard's cap badge and TRF on a Emerald Grey beret of the SRR. Would you have some explanations about that ? Thank you.

I've seen the Royal Signals badge worn on the SRR beret by members of the Signal squadron dedicated to them (like 264 Sqn and 22SAS). I can't figure why a member of an Infantry Regiment would wear the beret of another regiment unless they had earned it and were proud of it. I've seen Guardsmen wear the maroon beret whilst attached to 5 or 16 Brigades, but once out of the airborne role the big shouty man (aka RSM) would not tolerate people in HIS Regiment wearing an assortment of technicolour berets on parade.
So, in short it's either a member of the Guards attached to the SRR (unlikely as they'd probably wear the SRR cap badge after completing SRR selection)? OR, it's an ex-member of the SRR who is wearing his original beret badge on his SRR beret. This would probably barely be tolerated unless he had left the Guards and wore it at parades/Remembrance Day/Association type things. I'm sure we've all seen the assortment of headgear worn at the Cenotaph for the march past. This beret would ensure he marched with the Guards, but recognised his other service. Ian H Just my tuppence and happy to be proven wrong. |

Hiya,
In short you'll never know. However: A made up assembly to improve selling; Attached to SRR in a support role; Part of the Regt but not yet permanent cadre. A perfectly plausible combination though as is practically any capbadge. That needlework looks well shoddy though! In this case I would say provenance is king :-)

"You'll never know"...
One day a long time ago I had an old Welsh Guards tunic with an SAS wing on it. To cut a long story short I met a guy in a collectors market who collected the same stuff as me. I invited him round to my place to see some of my collection and he was taken aback when he saw the tunic. "You've got Taff's tunic" was what he said. A short while later I got my hands on a few Mars and Minerva Regimental magazines. There he was, in a photo receiving his LS&GC medal from a chap called De La Billiere. I think I believe him. Taff - I've got your tunic. Another piece was a silver cigarette case, inscribed to an SAS officer. "Bloody hell, I put money towards that. You know he committed suicide?" Ian H |

Good evening and thank you for your comments.
This beret comes from a trustworthy dealer and the price was really correct. He sold me two other berets from UKSF : 264 (SAS) Signal Squadron and 267 (SRR) Signal Squadron. But this Coldstream Guard in SRR is indeed an enigma. The inside liner has been removed and I can't see any sign of a previous sewn badge. |

I doubt whether the SRR would be wearing their berets anywhere other than in their barracks, wherever they are (are they near Credenhill?), any more than the SAS do, as they're supposed to be a super secret unit, aren't they? When they were first stood up there was a photo of them, but with their backs turned so that all you could see was the backs of their berets. Perhaps if the owner was back with his old regiment, the Coldstream, he could wear it, but as you say, it would likely incur the wrath of the RSM.

I am afraid that wearing the CG badge on an SRR beret is very suspect. The SRR badge should be worn. The affiliated Sig sqn do wear the Signals cap badge on the SRR beret but they are part of 18 Sig Regt proper and not the sqn.
There is a market for these berets but they are available brand new on line and easy to match up to a badge for the collectors' market for a quick profit. Without provenance then I would not pay any premium price for them. |

Hi Andy
Thanks, I thought it must have been some SF connection but didn't know what. is it an actual unit or just volunteers who wear a grey beret while in this SRR? Cheers, Alex |
