Both my great grandfathers were part of the Russian Army in WW1.

One commanded a Siberian Rifle Regiment and the other was a staff officer.

Not to belittle their efforts, or yours here on the forum, but doesn't having just two great grandfathers suggest some form of inbreeding???

Having one g-g-f on the maternal side and one g-g-f on the paternal side, it is not...

Two great grand fathers - maternal and paternal

The Colonel who commanded the Siberian Rifle Regiment was my dad's paternal grand father and the Staff Captain was his maternal grand father.

Both, instead of half of, suggested just two, to me at least, where there normally are four, right? Anyway, I suppose I should have used one of those newfangled 'smilie' thingmajiggies like Slick Mick did.
Oh well, time for bed, completeley free of ANY relatives, paternal or maternal, I might hasten to add...

Rgds, Thomas.

I also had a great, great uncle in WW1 who was a Cossack General in the Russian army.

Went from a Captain in 1914 to a Major-General in 1919.

And other Russian great, great uncle flew with the French Air Service in WW1.

What fabulous looking uniforms in the photo, all the fancy embroidery, medals orders and decorations, and fur pelt headdress, plumes...super stuff. Would be great in colour.

I wonder what became of these gentlemen. As from the aristocratic classes I double they would have survived the pending revolution, exile or death would be their most likely fate.

A great image and thread, Mick what interesting family you have...

Sukhomlinov lived in extreme poverty in Berlin, where he was found frozen to death on a park bench one morning in February 1926.

Thanks Keith!

And yes certainly interesting. I also had a great, great uncle in WW2 who served on SOE in the Far East.

Sadly, also had 3 great uncles murdered by the Bolsheviks during the Russian civil war.
