Default Burma Veteran and Nigerian Police Grouping.

Hello all,

just noticed this sub-forum and thought it was a natural home for the following group i purchased a number of months ago.

I am in no means either a medal or an insignia collector but i do have a weakness for things of a colonial nature, my interests are all things Burma related, and i just appreciate quality things.

The Burma connection initially garnered my interest, but on examination of the collar dogs, cap badge and other assorted insignia i was so charmed by them that the group virtually sold itself to me.

The grouping itself is in the queue for further research ( along with a multitude of others), the masonic associated medal is named and i hope that will provide help when i get around to digging for information.

The Nigerian Police service medal is sadly lacking its ribbon, but as you can see it is present on the full size ribbon bar.

The collar gorget patches and the crossed baton rank devices bear a Queens Crown, all the other insignia bears a Kings Crown however.

To start with here is an overview of the grouping.

Hi Roobarb

Thank you for sharing, an interesting collection to a veteran who, presumably, served in the Nigerian Police at senior rank from the colonial era through into independence (viz. the devices shown on the two sides of the Meritorious Service medal: that with the elephant as both cap and collar insignia, with the shield supported by the horses acting as a rank device in lieu of the crown). Good luck with your research - I for one will be interested to see what you find out.

Best

Graham (Chacal)

Hello Graham,

delighted that you found them of interest. It would appear that the gentleman in question had quite a long career in uniform judging from the various items.

I do wonder if he served with or alongside west africans in Burma...but that is my collector brain filling in blanks which is always a dangerous temptation.

Should i discern more, i will post it.

Patrick.

Lovely group - the last medal ribbon on the bar appears to be that of the Iraq Active Service Medal???

Hello Eddie,

thanks for the thoughts on the ribbon...it does share the characteristics indeed.
I assumed it was for the police award as medals are not my forte. It would be nice if it were related to service in Iraq.

The medal roll for that award for officers & enlisted can be downloaded from the national archives ( along with many others, it is quite a treasure trove) so i will be trawling through it later today after work.

I too am not a buff on medals, but the ribbon colours are Nigerian as per (as per their flag). There doesn't seem to be any Internet references for it. I too like the group and badges. Thanks for showing them.

That's a brilliant catch!

thanks for the link, appreciate it a great deal. I wonder if the ribbon remained unchanged in the post colonial era?

Just wondering if by any chance the Nigerian MSM might be available for sale?
