Default Some Interesting Scottish Bonnet Badges - HLI, KOSB etc

Good day folks

Here are some interesting Scottish bonnet badges

Bi Metallic HLI badge that could be an NCO's badge
Cast and with a No 7 stamped on the rear.

KOSB Badge with voided script - does this make it special in any way?

Royal Scots badge but all white metal. Is this economy or something else? It appears to have been made by Lambourne's.

Another LI badge that I don't recognise

and yet another that is well polished and made from cast white metal and brass. Is this something to do with the HLI as well?

As you can tell these are not my areas of expertise but I'd like to find out some more about them before offering them to the forum.

Many thanks

James

The very well polished one is a Royal Scots officers/warrant officers cap badge (totally differant to the OR's pattern).
The KOSB one is again officers/WO's pattern with pierced scrolls.
The HLI silver/gilt is also officers/WO's pattern.

I'd be interested if you're getting rid of them?

Brilliant, Thanks for the information Ian. I've sent you a PM

What about the Royal Scots in all white metal and the other LI badge that I haven't been able to identify? Anything further about them?

Thanks

James

There was a Royal Scots all WM badge but not sure if this is one or if maybe the GM overlay has just come off. Difficult to tell as the detail is either poor or worn off. If it's been polished, it was probably an all WM badge but if the staining in the centre is the remains of solder then the overlay has probably come off.
I'm sure somebody more knowledgeable could be more decisive.
Cheers,
Alex

Thanks for your comments everyone.

So just a puzzle over the Lambourne made w/m Royal Scots badge. I've looked very carefully and it just looks worn to me. I can't see any signs of solder.

The rest

Well polished Royal Scots officers/warrant officers cap badge
The KOSB officers/WO's pattern with pierced scrolls.
The HLI silver/gilt is also officers/WO's pattern.
4th/5th Royal Scots.

Thanks everyone for your help.

James

Bang on correct Ian. They are/were traditionally known within infantry regiments as 'staff badges' as they were originally worn only by officers; and SNCOs of the battalion 'staff', such as the SM, QMS, ORS, Musketry Sgt Instr, Master Cook, Master Tailor and several more. The term and badge actually pre-dates the creation of the rank of WO2. They were not worn at company level until the creation of that rank for the CSM appointment in 1915. Sadly only the Foot Guards and some infantry regiments (with bullion wire badges for select ranks) still follow the practice of 'staff badges' and I suspect that the term might have dropped out of use now. Before 1881 and the adoption of Scottish styled dress by all Scots infantry, rather than just Highlanders, staff badges had been worn on peaked forage caps (of successive 'patterns') by each regiment's officers and battalion staff. The staff badges were never provided at public expense and clothing regulations insisted that they were funded under 'regimental arrangements'. Successive clothing regulations recommended the use of the unit 'wet' canteen funds for this and similar purposes. The caps themselves (which were of officer pattern) were provided at public expense.

You can see the HLI badge and cap worn between 1881 and 1897 in plate 10 (appearing later today), via the link embedded here: http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...ad.php?t=60481

After the demise of the forage cap for Scottish regiments staff badges continued to be worn on the various types of bonnet.
