Hi all
I cannot remember the actual unit designation that used this type of printed Pegasus in the 1970's(?). Thanks in advance. cheers Phill |

Phil.
I think this type first appears very late war or more likely early post war rather than 70's. So called by some the reverse weave type which is fairly commonly on some post war insignia.

The fabric is not the same cotton drill types(Drill 2 Course weave or Drill 2 fine weave) as per Oliver Locks book ,this has a very "lighter", "smoother" cotton feel. Also note Belaphron's spiked helmet , all the WWII issued I have seen are solid. Another point is the spear head which is a pointed triangle, where as WWII have the "trident" spear point. It doesn't glow under black light so maybe a 1950's variant? More opinions welcomed. cheers Phill |

Hi Jerry
From Oliver Lock's book Re 16th TA Airborne Div., raised in 1947 , had a printed version with new colours of Gold on light blue, same spiked helmet and triangle spear, later used for the 16th Parachute Brigade. Now note the colour and figure used for 16th TA. see website: Clearly a picture of the one I have shown. http://www.steppingforwardlondon.org...vision-ta.html So I think you are correct post WWII c1947-1956 era. I think it is certainly post war, it is very different in all respects than the earlier wartime badges, although, a great many of those, themselves, were worn after the war.
There are a number of differing Pegasus, some really noticeable in their design, in particular, the shade of blue. You even had the Guards, who were acting as the brigades pathfinders wearing them, on occasion, throughout the early 1960's and as late as circa 1965, on their jungle greens whilst out in Singapore and Borneo. Still new to British Formation signs and inquisitive if this style of FS was attributed to a specific unit/time period or generic airborne Forces FS variant. The most noticeable point is the spiked helmet, could that be a conscious made decision to separate WWII era 1940-46 Airborne units(16 AB TA) to post war airborne units? Although, as you mentioned, WWII Pegasus were used post war. cheers Phill |
