Tropical uniform rank chevrons
Hello,
Am I correct in thinking that on a British Army WW2 aertex shirt worn in the desert the rank chevrons would only be worn on the right sleeve, also would the stripes be plain white or the same as worn on battledress. I'm recreating my father in laws uniform from WW2 for my grandson to wear and there seems to be conflicting information depending on where I look. |

I suspect that NCOs wore whatever was available so you could see BD type chevrons on brassards, armbands or a just tape or a piece of elastic. Also white tape chevrons made up by local or regimental tailors. Rifle and Light Infantry regiments often wore their regimental black on scarlet, black on rifle green or green on maize chevrons.

When NCO rank was worn it was mainly on the right arm. I know that a few Royal Regiment of Artillery NCOs used white tape stitched on the sleeve, normal chevrons held on by elastic, normal chevrons stitched to a piece of cloth held on by buttons or elastic. In some gun detachments rank was not worn at all as everyone new who was who.

Thank you Marc and Tim for your help.
From what you say I have several choices open to me which is good as I didn't want to do any thing that was obviously wrong. Thank you again, Martin. |
