Hi Avante
That is the classic 'CASH TAPE' tile - approx. 17mm 'top to bottom' to be original WW2. Variants at 13mm are dubious. Yours looks right and certainly South African Officers were attached to several RM units in WW2. Mike PS - I believe called 'CASH' tape as manufactured by a firm called Cash - as per this modern advert https://jjcash.co.uk/ and this article http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...140-years.html |

Any reason why there isn't a red flash behind the beret badge?

Is the beret black rather than dark blue?

Hi! Thanks to all.
Beret is blue not black and badge appear never removed or touched. No red backing maybe because he was South african...? Thanks to Mike also for the explanation of the "cash" name,... before I did not understand what it meant... I confirm 17 mm TtB So he was a RM (there is a name but appear unreadable) in service not as a "commando" but as a simple "seaman" in harbours or something else. Correct? Thank you Cheers Mau |

Royal Marines served in numerous roles - not just Commando or Docks. For example Landing Craft (although unsure if South African Officer would be in that role - others may know). For Royal Marines there were heavy artillery siege regiments, engineers, Mobile Naval Base Defence Organisations, Training Establishments, all manner of 'Combined Operations' amphibious units, Armoured units ... the list goes on an on ...
I do not know what headdress a South African attached to a Commando would wear if attached without Cdo training at Achnacarry etc ... again others may know. This could be a possibility though as a number of South African Officers were attached to various Commandos, - some may have not been through Cdo training (perhaps?) in which case the dark beret MAY be appropriate - any comments from Royal Marine specialists appreciated. Of course the absence of a 'COMMANDO' Cash tape may well indicate service was not with a 'Commando' unit, but in another role as you suggest. Mike |

Great Information. I will need to read this over several times before it sinks in.
A few other examples recently acquired out of a collection here in the states. They all appear to be WW2 but am always interested in other thoughts. This is the first embroidered Royal Marines title I have seen or owned. Have seen numerous Cash style tapes. thanks Jack
