There is an interesting looking badge, attributed to 10 Light Horse for sale on eBay at ref 220249378860.

Looks like a unit boppled together for South Africa

If you check out the listing, please let us know if you have any info for us on that badge. It looks a rare one.

Hi John,

That's a 10th Australian Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) collar badge that was worn between 1900 and 1912. I don't believe it would have been worn in South Africa as that unit as such didn't deploy there as a unit.

As you know, I am particularly interested in 10LH, and this badge is a new one on me. I will now try to find out how the Eastern States muscled in on a Western Australia regiment. Thanks for the lead.

Hi John,

The 10th Light Horse only became the "10th" Light Horse in 1914. Prior to that, the single Western Australian Light Horse regiment was the 25th Light Horse (WAMI).

From the Australian War Memorial:

"The 10th Light Horse Regiment was a Light Horse militia unit in Western Australia. Prior to World War 1, the 25th Light Horse (Western Australian Mounted Infantry) was the only Light Horse regiment in Western Australia and on 1st October, 1918 as part of a army renumbering scheme became the 10th Light Horse. This scheme was adopted so that Citizen Military Force (CMF) units would take on the numerical designations of their A.I.F. counterparts which had been raised in the same areas."

It was only after World War 1 that the numerical designation "10th" was associated with the West :-) And continues to this day.

The 10th Light Horse (WAMI) was formed as a militia Light Horse unit in the 1920s and adopted the 10th Light Horse AIF battle honours.

Prior to World War 1, the 10th Light Horse was a Victorian unit. There was a lot of re designation happening between 1903 and 1914 for the Australian Light Horse regiments.

I have a display of badges of units I have served with in UK, Australia, and the then Rhodesia, including the cap badge and collar dogs issued to me in 10 WAMI, around which has grown a small collection of 10 Light Horse and RAAC badges.

Now, inspired by your postings of the Light Horse I am concentrating on the badges associated with the regiment, and learning more about its history than through negligence on my part I larned during the six years I was with them.

Apart from blaming you for the money I will be blowing on future Light Horse badges, I do sincerely thank you for your lead in this, and know I will be able to bounce questions off you, for which I also thank you.

I am always glad to assist.

Bear in mind though, if you find those 1900-42 badges with a dealer they most likely won't go cheap - I would expect to pay AUD$500+ for a lot of those badges.

I'm certainly not a 10th Light Horse expert by any means but I do know a couple of very knowledgeable individuals who know a fair bit about the regiment and it's history.
