Signal Corps Badge Question
Hello All,
This badge was sold to me as, A Distinguished Pass Regimental Signals Badge. I have seen plenty of crossed flag badges, but never with a star. Can anyone enlighten me? Or is this just a made up fantasy? Regards Phil.

Signals Badge
Dear Phil.
I must admit I have never seen this configuration of Star and Signals Flags before. Certainly not British. Very much doubt it is Commonwealth either. Perhaps Cliff Lord (Quicksilver) can venture an answer. Best wishes Chris Walker

May not be Royal Signals - could be any signal unit within a regiment, battalion, etc as a reward etc.

I too have never seen this brass signals badge anywhere however the configuration looks like it does exist but in a different form, new not old.
EDWARDS AND LANGLEY BRITISH RMY PROFICIENCY BADGES 2005 reprint Page 137 photo 314 Shows this badge as "flags, crossed, star SatA Distinguised Pass Regimental Signals Standard 1 Course" Photo is from my collection. Cheers Sean

Hi Phil,
Just had a look at my examples and the star on the Australian manufactured types is different. Five-pointed for sure but these have a rosette in the centre of them. The star on this one might be the distance-judging star, which I've never seen. Keith

It is my understanding that during WW1 the star was awarded for "Best at Judging Distance," and the "Badge worn on right forearm above other badges."
So it seems to me the combination is perfectly fine.

The star was indeed worn pre-war in Australia with a number of Trade and Skill badges. The backing plates came with the required slot on top of the badge. There were three grades:
1. Signaller (or other trade): just the plain sleeve badge 2. 2nd Class (badge with star above) 3. 1st Class (badge with crown above). The star pictured is correct for second class but there was another larger star of different pattern which I think was worn separately for efficiency in a variety of contexts. I will find a scan of my Trade badges and post it when able.

Here is a random selection of Australian Trade badges showing stars and crowns to indicate 2nd class and 1st class. I haven't got a picture of the whole board but they were worn with many different trades. The separate larger star is the efficiency one worn by itself, also have one in oxidised finish and it was undoubtedly worn in WM as well.
I have some groups in gilt, WM, oxidised and bright copper. There are not many WM ones and have always wanted to know just which WM varieties exist.
