Hello Billy,
I'm positive the badge is a copy, there are a few tell tale signs to follow if I remember, I think the quick thread search on the badge should confirm this, just my opinion of course

Wrong one unfortunately ... Wrong colours, wrong detail, just about everything wrong actually ...
Here is one for comparison - it is part of an attributed grouping to a Rhodesian veteran. Sorry the badge is a bit worn, I appreciate it does not help with identifying the colours but personally how I like them. There are variations, so it a mistake to think every example fits a set template. That said, it does give a general idea of what to look for re shape of letters which are rarely 'uniform' etc. etc.
If you read the motto backwards it reads 'Men like you quit' - an observation Len Whittaker made
I hope this helps
Mike

The easiest way to weed out most fakes is the diagonal lines in the torse, top right to bottom left is fake.

Thomas

It is true that the torse lines were always said to be a firm indicator of real or fake - however, that has been disproven in a couple of genuine examples so although being a good indicator is not 100% reliable. You are right to qualify the test by saying it applies to 'most fakes'.

All the best and hoping you are keeping well

Mike

Default SF badges

I strongly recommend Len Whittakers "Some talk of private armies", the original badge design is reproduced in this book.

As for Thomas's reply, this is borne out by the drawing as being correct. As to whether this was adhered to by manufacturers must surely needed to be proven as it is an open gateway for wrongly produced fakes.

Plenty of examples of correct ones on the forum:

http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...93&postcount=8

http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...55&postcount=2

http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...17&postcount=1

Whilst a certain book does feature what looks like a machine made example from Yugoslavia c1944, I wouldn't feel comfortable shelling out over a grand for one that didn't look like any of the above!

Thanks Paul/Rob/Thomas
It will not go unnoticed that all the examples in the links provided by Paul (and the one I added) have the lines in the torse 'left to right' as Thomas rightly says, and as illustrated in Len's 'Some Talk of Private Armies'. In perhaps 90% of cases this is correct and is a firm indicator of a genuine badge - although it needs to be considered together with other factors (letter shape/thickness etc). However, I would repeat the point that it is not a cast iron indicator. Some genuine examples have been found with the torse lines running in the opposite slant. There is evidence to suggest some examples were manufactured 'in unit' which provides potential for further variation.
Len's Book is certainly worth getting as Rob says and includes a proforma of the original design - again this is subject to manufacturer interpretation as Rob suggests
The one in the book Paul refers to has another feature that does not appear correct - a separate motto scroll sewn to the backing.
I hope this helps
Mike

A great but very hard badge to find

To me the biggest indicator is most appear to be hand/theatre made, anything that looks machine made just puts me off straight away.

Here's mine for reference

Paul
Proper job! - The design is full of 'heraldic' symbolism
