Default Unknown Scottish Button - Military?

Hello all

A friend has this button with obvious Scottish connections!

It is not a regimental pattern that I recognise but it has been suggested that it might be an officer's mess waiter's button. Personally I don't think it is, at least I have never seen one like this before but they do come in all manner of varieties!

Obviously it might be for a club, hotel or other organisation. I am hoping someone has seen it before and knows what it is.

Just to be clear, he will be selling it on at some point if it is not within his collecting sphere.

Regards
Roger

Hi Roger,

Not much help I am afraid, as I don't recognise it at all.

I think you may well be right and the "C" in the middle might be for "Caledonian" or "Club".

The 'Caledonian Club' - had just a thistle device on their buttons.

I will keep on looking - though the thing that is confusing me is the 5 pointed star to the centre. Which makes me think it may be a livery button.
Though the Cameronians mess waiters button, as I am sure you know, had a
5 pointed star (mullet) surrounded by a wreath of thistles.

It looks a nice button, whatever it is.

Ian

Roger,
My first thought was Cameronian Rifles but it lacks a bugle/horn, I am sure they used the star of the Covenanters within their badge who I think though I am probably wrong were a Scottish Religious society.

Away from home and using my memory.
I have seen it, but I'll check when I can access my data again.

The mullet, the heraldical term for the five pointed star, came from the arms of the Earl of Angus, who raised the regiment and was a member of clan Douglas.

The bugle came from the 90th Perthshire Volunteers, later the 2nd Battalion.

And there was me thinking that William Cleland the first CO of the Cameronians was aligned to the Earl of Argyll having come from service of the house of the Marquise of Douglas as a gamekeeper

Hello btns

Many thanks for looking and to all those who have contributed.

It seems that for the time being at least this is another of those mystery buttons that we all come across from time to time!

All the best to you all
Roger
