Badges and insignia of the New Zealand Army,Edition 3
Hello Men,
i recieved my copy of the latest edition of Geoffry Oldham's latest book,Badges and Insignia of the New Zealand Army,Edition 3. Good to see many of the errors of the past,i.e Triple ferns as being 1st,2nd and third reinforcements,NZNC A,B company etc ammended. Also pleased to see my Fern leaf hat badge 4/271 included(More research to be done on that one). I however ,disagree with ,page 35 ,3rd to fifth reinforcements, quote ''these frame types of some of the known ,3rd ,4th and fifth reinforcements badges were not introduced until the 11th Reinforcements.A possible answer is that these badges were actually used by the Rifle Brigade or some other reinforcement unit'' Photographic evidence is everything. Private Robert Samuel Loper 8/2443 wearing D (Otago company)5th reinforcement badge, who sailed with the 5th reinforcements , also Arthur Thomas Cooper 8/2420 also D5,sailed with the 5th reinforcements cheers iain You never know i might get some credit one day. Iain, I got my book today
I believe Geoff is correct as he has use the word "some," and is directly referring to #4/6, 4/9, 4/11, which were not worn by the 3rd, 4th or 5th Reinforcements. IMO I believe they were purposely made for the collectors market/museums shortly after WW1. |

Could a dealer/publisher/source for this book be recommended?

Hi All,
Google "Military Memorabilia Ltd." to enter Geoff Oldham's website. My book is in the post. Cheers, Tinto |

i should have worded my opening comment better. There is no doubt that some of the 3rd to fifth reinforcements were either worn later,or post war collectors items. But some were diffinately worn ,D5 being my example. Now how is the average collector supposed to know the difference?Certainly not from information supplied in the book. I think to make a diffinative statement Oldham should have pointed out the frame types that were worn 3-5,and badges worn later. But thats only one mans opinion. Now theres a few other queries that will come out of the woodwork. But it is a new improved version is diffinately better than the 1997 one |

Iain, because we operate under ‘non de plumes,’ only a handful of collectors would know that it was yourself who supplied the key photographic evidence that solved the mystery regarding the ‘Triple fern reinforcement badges.’
In a round about way, your reward is knowing that Geoff’s has amended his information as a result of your efforts. I get where you are coming from and you are 100% correct, a photo of the very rare D/5 badge would have been more desirable as an accurate depiction of what was actually worn by the 5th Reinforcements. But then I am bias, as I am lucky enough to own an original D/5 reinforcement badge. |

Now Brent,
i think this is an excellent opportunity for you to showcase your research abilities ,and unlock the mysteries behind which early reinforcements badges were worn ,and which were later or used for the post war collectors market.I think we have done a similar thread on a different forum. Now theres a few other things i would like to bring up about the latest edition, of Oldham's ,but i don't want to be be seen as a complaining bugger. But there are a few question marks!!!!! cheers iain |

Iain, I'm up for it if you are.
Geoff's book is really a price guide, and I think it is well worth the money. If we want a good resource of information about early reinforcement badges, you and I will have to write it |

Now theres an idea. Craig Hooper has been working on one for many years - still work in progress I fear.

Just recieved my copy of this book and I think it's Great. Most noticeable difference is that the badge values are right under the pictures.... not on a separate page that you have to flip back to. Having current values plus the additional badges that were added to this edition makes it a winner.

my interest is post 1953 badges.
Is this book any good for badges of that era? Thanks Gordon
