It's still out there!
Gentleman,
My apologies for the title, I do remember a thread that was, I think, by Peter Brydon with the same title. Life is indeed a wonderful thing, full of surprises, some thirty something years ago I was talking to an old gentleman who had been an officer in the RTR during the war, he is sadly no longer with us. It was very memorable for me because he showed me his original wartime beret which was interesting to a school boy like me who collected badges simply because of the very fine silver badge on it. It was not the usual hallmarked badge by Gaunt, or a simple plated piece, but, a quite scarce Ludlow made example in silver Over the years I had never forgotten and always said if I ever saw one I would buy it, but I never did, see another, until now that is. Good story and a nice badge.
I'm looking for some items I don't reckon I will ever get but who knows. It just means less money spent on collecting. |

A great reason to buy a badge Frank and a very nice badge. I have a Ludlow London marked badge, though not in silver and not as nice as this.

Hello Simon,
They are Sterling, Ludlow and London, very typical of their silver pieces. Regards Frank |

Hello Jerry,
They did make some really good wartime pieces and not just for officers either. I think it is very important to remember that whilst they did make the badge, as here, they seldom actually made the die that any given piece was struck or cast from. They simply used other peoples instead! Kind regards Frank |

Hello Jerry,
Yes indeed, they were famous for that, but, often the result was a really nice badge. They actually made wartime badges for the Parachute Regiment, cast in white metal from a die intended to cast silver officers badges, they simply engraved the die "Ludlow London" so each badge made from it had their name embossed on it's reverse and these were issued to the rank and file, much nicer than the usual thin struck badges. Thanks Frank. I assume that these are not seen very often.

Hello Jerry,
Well, I think it is like everything these days, but, I've certainly never regarded them as rare, this regiment was huge during the war and only shrunk after it had ended. I mentioned this in particular because like the RTR, it just stands out, typical of Ludlow made badges, but, I like them all very much. I don't buy many badges these days, but, I do find it difficult not to buy something that I really like, although, I do manage not to on occasion. Regards again Frank |

Hello Iain,
Thought you might like it, being a "tankie" certainly one to look out for if you don't already have an example in your collection, not that rare in particular either, moreover, rather cheaper than the more usual Gaunt piece when they turn up. Is it nice and warm down there with you? Not great up here with me! Kind regards Frank |
