not good.
just had a look through Denis Wood's book to see if the design was used elsewhere, and it isn't, just this officers title, with the "flames of the grenade shaped to fit the curve of Tyneside" as he puts it.

Wood doesn't mention any other version but "silver" as far as I can see. I assume this includes silver plated as mine is.
No chance yours just has worn plating? Anyway, I've never seen these copied yet so I would personally still keep it.

I would keep it too. Can't post mine at the moment, but it looks OK to me.

The grenade should be 28x27mm, according to the book

No problem raesherwood, I was out of the game for twenty years so I'm unaware of lots of things like this. Thanks for bringing me up to speed. So....bad news Leigh.

Tyneside Scottish - Silver?
I have had this one for a while, and can't decide exactly what it is, or whether it's even a ringer or not.
There has been a suggestion that the same badge was issued post 1947, but I think that was marked "sterling"? Am not sure. This one has not been tested, but it does pass the "paper test". It is totally unmarked, and might even be plated? It fits the description in Dennis Woods book of the third pattern. Any opinions please folks? My suspicions are not good..... it is quite heavy - almost twice the weight of a standard WM badge. Does this suggest silver? Even if it does, is it real? Cheers, Neil |

Neil - I like the reverse strike image which suggests that it should be good. It would, if silver, be private purchase and it is known that Northern Goldsmiths and Reid and Sons made such items for officers during WW2 and even after. There must have been other jewellers who would have offered the same service. I have had three of these in the past but only one hallmarked. I tend to be very suspicious of the 'sterling' marks as the item could have been made yesterday - as illustrated with many currently on ebay. In my personal opinion - and it is only an opinion - a very nice badge. David

These are reassuring words David, thanks. I have not seen any hallmarked ones for some time to this pattern, although quite a few variations do exist obviously. This one did come from the right neck of the woods, although that doesn't mean much nowadays
I have another non-hallmarked, but marked JRG & S. Having weighed this today, it is almost identical. I must get them both tested. Still don't like the patina. It looks too new. I cleaned it a few years back, and it's hardly oxidised. Regards, Neil |

Tyneside Scottish - STs
Gentlemen,
sorry to be rather to the point, however what's the going rate for a 2 part solid/non-voided TYNESIDE SCOTTISH shoulder title? It is just the 2 parts with no numeral or backing plate, although in super condition with 2 flat diamond shapped lugs to each piece! Many thanks Andy |

Hi Andy
I reckon 60 would be reasonable - there is no backing plate, however this is a valid combination title, even if no number. Maybe a little more or less on our favourite site? I paid just over this last year at auction for mine, with backing plate. Cheers |
