I had a Black Watch white metal badge a while ago which I was told was a copy. It had an unconvincing St Andrew figure and also the spelling on the circlet read MEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT rather than NEMO. I notice one of the badges above is also spelt MEMO. Is this a variation of the motto or a mistake in the makers die ?

Regards Alan Y

I'd not noticed that before. I've another 'Memo' from my early days of collecting, it was bought from a dealer pre ebay days, bought as a normal or's badge but it turned out to be silver plate. Funny I've never been quite happy with it. I take a snap and post later.

So all the Memos are Duffos

I have owned this Silver plate badge for a while, never quite sure of it until i saw the same badge on a well known dealers stall at Farnam.
When i asked who wore this type of badge i was told pipers, can anyone confirm this.

3D cameras have been around for nearly as long as photography itself, the trouble with macro 3D photography is that most dedicated 3D camera's are primarily made for landscape photography, and have problems with the short distance needed to take good badge images. Then there's the discolouration of the images from seperating the primary colours red and green, so unfortunately I doubt we'll be seing 3d taking over on a large scale from 2D anytime soon.

If interested PM me for a near fiddlyless digital 3D process, no special camera needed.

I was just thinking today how nice it would be if we could collate all the info on restrikes of a single badge in one place, sort of like a gallery, rather than it being buried across the forum.

It would take someone who knew the badge and its reproductions in detail- ie a specialist - but such an undertaking might just make things too easy. (i.e. drive prices up)

I think we had similar ideas early on for the badge galleries; show original and reproductions, but we didn't do it.

Mike,

Couldn't such a gallery be exclusive if, as you say, it might be making this too easy?

Yes, it could be password protected, exclusive to the contributors or 200+ posters, etc

If that were the case then people such as myself would be excluded from viewing the albums, when I have been a member for a few years, and have tried to make positive contributions to the forum, when a subject matter or thread is of interest.
Conversely, someone who has been a member for a few weeks and has done nothing but ask inane questions such as is this badge real, whilst accruing a far higher input rating, gets access all areas .
Surely that wouldn't be fair?
Cheers.

I agree with you Alan, it would seem a little unfair , prehaps one of the critea's could be how long you've been a member or prehaps how many albums you have. As an antiques dealer I am well aware of forgeries but don't really see how a gallery of restrikes would benefit unscrupulous people, it would just educate collectors so said badges could no longer be passed off as originals. If I was going to fake a badge , I'd use an original as a template.

As I am not a collector of cap badges maybe I'm missing the point?

Ben

Fair comment,as you say,you speak as a dealer not a collector, and as such, someone who has no indepth interest in the items other than to ascertain their validity as originals, due to their subsequent increased commercial value.

As regards posting albums on the site as a criteria, then that would only be worthwhile if you personally had something different to display, or share with others,ie something which hasn't already been illustrated 10 times over.
That being the case with me,is why I haven't gone down that road. There are some collections on display here, with items of such quality that they make mine look paltry by comparison .

I couldn't agree more with Alan (Spreadeagle), on the points he raises here, though I would just like to underline that the suggestion to make any such album exclusive was intended purely as a safeguard for the benefit of members, of course, and not as a means by which to exclude some.

Regards,

Peter.

Hi Alan,

I wasn't having a dig at you regarding your contribution to the forum, just trying to offer what I thought was a solution.

I think it's best I don't get involved with any other threads that clearly I have no right to have a comment on.

Regards
Ben

Ben,
On the contrary,as the very name suggests, this a forum, and I'd like to believe a very open one at that.If you are a registered member then you have every right to express an opinion as long as it is reasoned and non offensive.
Neither was I having a pop at Peter,I was just explaining that initially what could be construed as sound criteria for access to certain albums, may also be punitive to genuine forum members who may not necessarily contibute on a regular basis .
Cheers.
Alan
