Default A "LOT" of money for a suspect badge!

I'm not having a go at this seller as I have in the past had one or two good items from him, however, I hope it is not a Forum member bidding on this one?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWAX:IT

or this one!

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rare-Guards-Ma...item3f08bca026

and this one does not look right to me either?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rare-Badge-Roy...item4158411d56

Best regards - Andy

This is the third 4th V B Cameronians I've seen on eBay this month,so already reason to suspect something awry here, given it's rarity as an original.
In my experience ,from the appearance the WM badges shown, both look as if they've been "pickled",ie dipped in vinegar or similar, to give the Nickel an aged effect. This is especially obvious at the rear, and also and the unnatural colour of the sliders .

Dealers selling non original badges must have a source for such items and at pretty low prices.

I know that if you search the internet you will come across a number of companies selling reproduction badges but they do not appear to be selling the items wholesale.

It would be interesting if we could find the source ( i.e the Manufacturer ) and compare their latest offerings with the number of times relatively rare items suddenly start appearing for sale.

P.B.
I find what this dealer says very interesting

The slider alone should ring warning bells with even the most inexperienced collector, never mind one with that much money to throw away!

I remember a few years ago that Marsh Militaria was selling badges, they produced a list anything you wanted you could get, dont know if they are still around.

2747andy, Interesting, I was going to bid higher on the R.M.R.E. BADGE (I had the first bid) so I think I will stay away, just in case

Malc,

Martin Marsh Militaria probably has done more for the hobby than anyone else ( in a negative way ), they used to be in North Cheshire/Derbyshire, I think it was New Mills, but they then moved but I dont know where they are now ( might be on the internet ).

They certainly had a huge number of badges they could supply but I dont know if they were the actual manufacturers.

If someone on the Forum wanted to start selling non genuine badges,it should not ( I would have thought ) be too difficult to find a source.

I suppose someone at a future fair could ask one of the dodgy dealers where they get their stock from but whether we would be told is another matter.

Peter

Just checked-Marsh Militaria no longer have a website- probably retired to the Bahamas

Wow!
Wouldn't catch me spending that much on slider like that. Looks like it was attatched last week. Flawless without any bends for such an old badge...

Simon.

I don't like it at all, the front has an appearance of sandcasting, particularly on the 4V
Add that to the shiny bright slider & something is definitely afoot!

Andy,
Yes,I am well aware that Scottish badges don't come with sliders,I meant the GMG badge in inparticular and the colour of that slider.

Peter ,
The mid 1980's Marsh Miltiaria catalogues came from a place called Whaley Bridge, and were illustrated with a pictorial guide called "Badges at a glance".

Originally all the badges were priced at £1.00 but very quickly rose in price due to the demand.Incidently at that time, you could get any badge ,in any metal, and were far more solid than the same restrike dross of this era.

How many do you get for that price ? That's an awful lot of battered Mars Bars.

Just saw the GMG badge at http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rare-Guards-Ma...item3f08bca026

It looks OK to me.

Anyone care to comment on this one? ... http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...Guards+Machine

There seem to be several on Ebay right now, including some from "Top Rated Sellers", including these:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EXCELLENT-...item3f1227b8fb

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rare-Guard...item45fff7e83d

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CAP-BADGES...item3f1220bcd4

Some with slider, others with loops, but how to tell the good from the bad?
