Default RND Officer's Cap Badge Copy

Hello All

I have just seen this badge on ebay ( http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RARE-WW1-B...item19cc898583). It is listed as genuine and is up for £135. The original description stated that it was part of a large collection put together between 1950 & 1995. He actually bought it off me in November 2011 (I listed it on ebay as a COPY). I contacted the seller to remind him of this fact and he has removed the bit about it being collected between 1950 & 1995 but it is still listed as genuine. Hopefully no one on this forum will bid as it is IMHO one of the common copies.

Paddy

Many thanks for the heads up Paddy.

You say that it is a common copy. Are they being produced now, or are they old copies? Also just how common are they? As this is a badge that I am looking to add to my collection, can you give me any clues as to what to look for?

Thanks, Andy

Tell you what makes me suspicious of badges on a sellers site who apparently specialize in them or at least militaria, is the omission of a rear picture. I would imagine anyone who deals in them knows the back is sometimes (most of the time), more important than the front.

Totally agree with you Simon, I hope all sellers who might read this will take it to heart. Sharp pics might help as well, there are still too many fuzzy ones out there.

Rgds,

Thomas.

If I had a lot of scare " Last Shako" badges, I am not sure I would sell them on E bay and if I did I would not start the bidding at just under £25.

(Mind you I wouldnt describe them as "cap badges" either.)

Andy

This type of copy has been around for years and there is one seller in particular who tends to list one every 3 months or so, he used to trade under a different name and did exactly the same thing, he's starting to pick up more negative feedback for selling repros as genuine so I wouldn't be surprised if he changes his name again. The main thing that stands out is that it is die stamped and I would expect genuine RND Officer's badges to be cast bronze or die cast. I have attached front and back pics of what I consider to be a good RND Officer's badge, you can see straightaway the differences (the blades have been shortened and drilled to take a split pin on this one, I bought it off a fellow forum member and it originally came from the famous auction house). I've also attached pictures of another one I've got which has been gilded (or painted) and brooched possibly as a sweetheart.

Paddy,

many thanks. I notice that your ones appear to be cast in one piece and the one that is on ebay seems (could be wrong) to be made in three (anchor, crown & laurel) parts.
