Badges of the RAF Book
I have seen the below for sale on eBay and Amazon, and before taking the plunge I was wondering if anyone already has a copy and would be prepared to recommend or otherwise?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/23111...ff14=95&ff19=0 Sadly it appears to have at least one reproduction badge on the front cover and appears to make reference to a WW1 economy issued badge, which I believe to be inaccurate! Andy |

Awful book!!! Useful only as a very basic general guide to RAF badges, but the author makes no distinction between wartime and post war, modern/repro and wartime. Basic information, some badges with no text. Poor.

Peter,
many thanks!! Looks like I've bought myself a "Shelf Filler"lol SAS1, would you agree that the non-voided RFC is nothing more than a "Fantasy" item? Despite seeing some pretty aged examples, I've yet to see one that matches any of the many variations of voided originals? Andy |

It's too bad, because it's one of the only (?) books showing badges of the RAF and its RFC antecedents. The layout is awful and all over the map, as if an amateur had prepared it. There are better illustrations online on RAFWeb and WW2 Wings. I'm not in a position to say how inaccurate it is but there is a definite need for a better, more comprehensive book on the subject, showing all the known variations of badges, particularly aircrew badges, as there have been a few new ones appearing in recent years. For example, I have noticed from looking at the online sites, Warren Carroll's book on wings, and my own aircrew badges that the typography in some of the pilot's wings in particular (i.e. how the letters RAF are displayed) is different and may be a way of dating them more accurately if only detailed information were available.
Just looking at the entries on the Forum for RAF/RFC and their related Commonwealth counterparts, they are fewer than anything Army related, probably because there were so many regiments and variations of badges, compared to the RAF or the Navy, although the Navy has many rate badges. Does that mean there is less interest or fewer collectors of RAF material, which is why no other books have been produced? Given that over the years a number of new books have come out about Army badges, some revising previous information, I think it's high time something new was produced. David |

Andy I asked the same question some time ago, and got similarly disparaging comments about it. T |

I am currently writing a four volume set on something unrelated to badges, but once that is done I intend to put together a book on RAF insignia, including RCAF, RAAF, SAAF, RNZAF and SRAF, as well as Cadets, Observer Corps, ATA, Civil Air Guard etc, which will largely be compiled from my own extensive collection, although I'm afraid it will be limited to 1939-45. It will not focus on one area, but all, rank badges, trade, cap, shoulder eagles, titles, wings, collars etc. |
