Gurkha Officers - help needed
Could anyone help ? I'm looking for information on Capt R J Higson ( 6th GR ) and a Capt Rudd (? - not sure of the exact spelling ) ( 1st GR ) .
I've recently acquired their swagger sticks and would like to know more about them. Tim |

G'day Tim
Very nice, well done, 2 in replacement of 1 !! Well done. My cane lives in a 4 1/2" artillery shell by the front door and recently did duty as a pointer at a talk to a local military group. Regards Phil. |

Neither officer shows up in the 1939 Indian Army List, but a number of IA Lists are available on line and you could, if you have the patience, troll those for the names. Some indication of when they served would, of course, simply this greatly.
I'm not sure this link is still good, but give it a try. Good luck! https://wiki.fibis.org/index.php/Ind...my_List_online |

My first impulse, just based on statistical probability - relative numbers - would be to look for war time commissions, as the expansion of the various GR units to multi-battalion size meant a large number of British officers were seconded to or ransferred to the IA to command those troops. Pre-WWI an IA unit would typically have less than a dozen British officers and in peacetime most would be with a unit for years, with not to much turnover. Sadly, war time commissions are harder to trace than pre-39 and post-45, but that's my gut feeling on where to start.

Found mention of a R.J. Higson in a 1945 Army List as a 2nd Lieutenant with an Emergency Commission (Indian Army) dated 11/2/45.
https://digital.nls.uk/british-milit...chive/89815014 And in the Indian Army List for 6th Gurkha Rifles https://archive.org/stream/in.ernet..../n389/mode/2up Last edited by Blackadder1916; 24-03-18 at 06:03 PM. |

Well done, Black adder. Exactly the sort of chap who might have gotten sent to a wartime battalion of the 6th.
