Default Closure of the Royal Artillery Museum

Don't know if you fellow members are aware of this, but it appears the H.M.Government are talking about the possible closure of 'Firepower', the Royal Artillery Museum. I have only just become aware of it on another Military Forum I use and therefore have signed the e.petition in a hope the closure may be prevented.

For those who would like to prevent the closure, please find the e.petition attached.

Thank you for your assistance;-

The Museum is deeply unpopular among serving RA - it's in the wrong place and is a financial albatross. The RA left Woolwich several years ago.

If people would make a donation to it's upkeep rather than signing a petition then that would be far better received.

Is the government`s thinking of closing the Museum another example of "British Values " ?

A further example being Dr. Liam Fox volunteering to lead British Troops back into Iraq:

Alan, Is it closing because its moving elsewhere, or is all part of the government cut-backs...? Like hearing aids?

It's not government funded. The RA circa 1991 wanted to have a Museum so they hammered the serving officers and soldiers to raise £10m. then they built it against widespread opinion in Woolwich - rubbish transport connections, much smaller than a Larkhill site could offer etc. The Defence budget does not pay for Museums as they are self funding charities. In this case the prophesy that it was in the wrong place has been proved.

Alan,
Not that anyone will ever be held accountable for that decision.... as usual.
Thanks, David

As the £10m build was in 1992 they are definitely all retired if not passed on by now.

I would have thought Larkhill should have been a "no brainer" for a Gunner Museum - on a flat trajectory for holiday makers and tourists en route to Oggieland - between Museum of Army Flying - Stonehenge - Haynes Motor Museum - Fleet Air Arm Museum and on to the West. Mike
