Default SA Artillery

Here are a couple of South Africa (?) Artillery badges (so I am told). I would like to know what unit and what would they be worn on.

While on the subject is there a date line for the pin on Metal Arm shields, Cloth Arm shields and the long cloth arm shields with a slot and pin?

I have now been told the first badge is for the SA School of Artillery circa 1987-, what was (is) it worn on, as it has two long screws and nuts.

Thanks

The first badge is indeed the SA School of Arty (Owen 2441), intro 1987. No idea about fixings.
The second looks to me as possibly the Arm badge worn beneath the generic badge of South West Africa: much like the Croix de Guerre ribbon now worn by
5 Bty RA beneath the beret badge.

Hello chaps

The zigzag badge is a headress badge for a beret and is a Corps badge to the artillery(Za).Some call them bakkies or balkies.

Cheers

Dave

Thank you Dave, is it worn on its own, and what headdress is the other badge worn on?

Badge is normaly worn on berets.
The "balkie" is/was worn underneath the badge.

With screws this long I would not want it in my beret.

Is this the way they are worn?

Hello 54

That's it.
I would say if the badge posts are long and uncropped it's likely never been issued.
In the Dudley Wall Ed 2005 he has your School Badge as 1986-to date.

Cheers

Dave

The badge was definetly a beret badge. Sometimes the screws were cut short, or bent over. The balkie was there to represent corps regardless of what unit you were in and was worn below the badge. The balkie is an artillery balkie. Regards Andrew

Default SA Artillery

I recall from my days in Johannesburg in the 1960's the white edging to the red artillery 'zig-zag' design was, I believe, the preserve of the Transvaal Horse Artillery. Is it in fact the recognised device of South African Artillery generally?

Hi John, you are correct as far as cloth helmet flashes are concerned. I do not know if the THA had their own beret balkie(Beret Bar), or wore the standard Artillery balkie as shown above. Maybe somebody else knows? Andrew
