1st Gloucestershire Regt insignia
Hi
Would like to hear any views about what this tiny insignia could be. My theory is that it may have formed a crest design motif for attachment to Regimental silver, or to a sword. Interestingly, it has the post-1881 title '1st Gloucestershire Regiment' on a strap, and the pre-1881 Foot Regt number 'XXVIII' beneath the Sphinx. Have never seen this combination before. IMHO you should be carefull drawing conclusions about those names.
1st Gloustershire Regiment might not be exactly the same as 1st Battalion, The Gloustershire Regiment. On the other hand, using the old number unofficialy and internaly for some time after the 1881 merge was not unusual. IIRC some refered to themselves with their old number until the very end. Jut my two pence.
