Whats this Scots Guards badge please
Hi all
Just picked this badge up. Looks to be unmarked silver. Passes the white paper test for silver. It has its lugs removed but also seems to have a post of some sort removed from the centre. Any thoughts BC |

Hi,
From looking at the back I would say that the badge was subsequently mounted as a sort of plaque. In order to do this the lugs were removed and a small brass screw (of which only the stump remains) brazed to the centre in order to take a securing nut. I have several similarly maltreated badges in my collection including two Royal Dock Yard Bn shako plates. Rgds, GTB |

thanks GTB,
the centre piece looks as if it was made this way. no overflow of braze etc. also, were these badges made in silver? thought that would be for officers and then that is a different pattern? bc |

Hi bc,
Yes, this badge was made both in white metal and in silver. In these metals it would form the centrepiece of a Scots Guards Piper's feather bonnet badge. One would have to look closely for hallmarks, which may be on the surrounding title strap (now missing). On the other hand, white metal can often resemble silver. Can you indicate size, please? Hi bc,
It would be surrounded by a strap inscribed SCOTS GUARDS. The older version was wm, the modern version is usually of silver plate. Googling 'Scots Guards Piper's Badge' will bring up a load of pictures. What I'm not really happy about, is the locations of the loops on your badge, which may indicate something else. But that's the pleasure of research and the final satisfaction when definitively identifying an item. Rgds, GTB |
