Hello Philip
I think you are looking at a period of use from about 1860 to 1901 (for the QVC version you have). According to Ray Westlake's book on Rifle Volunteers, the Herefords kept their volunteer corps title long after most rifle volunteers had assumed 'Volunteer Battalion' status of a regular regiment in 1887 or thereabouts. Presumably they kept their Rifle Volunteer buttons as well. I can't recall having seen a Herefordshire Rifle Volunteers button with a King's crown though, so they may have continued with the QVC version after 1901. Hopefully some other member will set me straight if wrong! Roger |
