This one isn't a repair as there is no damage to the badge and the brazing looks original compared to the slider.

Regarding the heavily polished badges, it is also likely that some continued to be worn by individuals even though contrary to regulation. Not an uncommon practice throughout the Army in both wars I think.

In some cases it's only a matter perception, a highly polished badge with all the highlights removed must mean he's been in for quite a while but the reality is that it could be his first week, I used to work with someone who was in the RAF for his national service and did it for that reason.
